Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my floor last?
The lifespan of your floor depends on the material and maintenance. Solid hardwood floors can last 50+ years with proper care, while engineered hardwood lasts 20–30 years. Vinyl (LVP/LVT), laminate, and carpet typically last 10–20 years. Routine maintenance and protective measures can significantly extend their durability.
What do we do with the furniture during installation or refinishing?
We recommend clearing the space prior to our arrival. If needed, we can assist with moving larger items for an additional fee. For refinishing jobs, furniture must remain off the floors for at least 24–48 hours post-completion to allow proper curing time.
What's the difference between LVP and LVT?
Both are luxury vinyl products, but they differ in appearance and application.
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) mimics natural hardwood and is ideal for areas where you want the look of wood.
LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) resembles stone or ceramic and works great in kitchens, bathrooms, or utility rooms. Both options are waterproof, durable, and low-maintenance.
How long does the installation or refinishing process take?
Installation: Most standard-size rooms can be completed in 1–2 days, depending on material and site prep.
Refinishing: This typically takes 2–5 days, depending on square footage, stain options, and dry time. We’ll provide a detailed project timeline before starting.
What are the best maintenance tips for my new floors?
Use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches.
Avoid excessive water or harsh chemicals when cleaning.
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove debris.
Use area rugs in high-traffic zones.
For hardwood, consider recoating every few years to maintain sheen and protect the surface.
Why are there gaps in my new hardwood floors?
Hardwood floors are made from natural wood, which expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. When the air in your home is drier—especially during colder months—the wood can shrink, causing small gaps and unevenness between boards. These gaps often close on their own when humidity levels rise again.
This movement is normal and expected with real hardwood (Especially in New York). Keeping your home’s humidity between 35–55% can help reduce seasonal gaps. If gaps seem unusually large or do not improve over time, please contact Boardwalk Floor Services and we’ll be happy to take a look.
How soon can I walk on my floors and put furniture back after they are freshly refinished?
Light foot traffic is usually allowed after 12-24 hours , but we recommend waiting 48–72 hours before moving furniture back onto the floors. This gives the finish time to properly cure and helps prevent dents or marks. When moving furniture back, lift items instead of dragging them and use felt pads under all legs. Area rugs should typically wait 7–14 days, depending on the finish used.
Drying and curing times can vary based on the type of finish and indoor conditions, so we’ll provide specific guidance for your project.
Can I be in my home while my floors are being done?
Yes, in most cases you can safely remain in your home while we work on your floors. We take steps to minimize disruption by controlling dust, maintaining ventilation, and working efficiently. That said, certain areas of your home may be temporarily inaccessible, and you will notice some noise and mild odors, especially during sanding and refinishing. If you have young children, pets, or sensitivities, we may recommend staying out of the home for a short period depending on the products being used.
Before your project begins, one of our team members will walk you through exactly what to expect and let you know if any special arrangements are recommended. Your comfort and safety are always our priority.
What are the best ways to clean my hardwood floors in my home?
The best way to clean hardwood floors is to first keep them free of dirt and moisture as much as possible. Regularly sweep or vacuum using a soft-bristle broom or a hardwood-safe vacuum to remove dust and debris.
For deeper cleaning, use a damp (not wet) microfiber mop with a cleaner (Bona or vinegar/water ratio). Avoid using excessive water, steam mops, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the wood and finish.
Wipe up spills promptly, use mats at entryways, and place felt pads under furniture to help protect your floors and keep them looking their best.
How long should my wood floors last after getting them refinished?
After a professional refinishing, wood floors typically last 12-20 years, depending on foot traffic, maintenance, and overall care. Many solid hardwood floors can be refinished multiple times, extending their lifespan further. Daily cleaning, felt pads on furniture, maintaining proper indoor humidity/temperature, and addressing wear early will help your refinished floors look great for years to come.
How often should I have my floors deep cleaned in my home?
For most homes, a deep cleaning of hardwood floors 1–2 times per year is ideal. This goes beyond regular sweeping or light mopping and helps remove dirt buildup in cracks and between boards. Homes with pets, children, or heavy foot traffic may benefit from more frequent deep cleaning, while lightly used spaces may need it less often. Regular maintenance like sweeping, vacuuming, and spot cleaning will also keep your floors looking their best between deep cleans.
How long will new vinyl flooring last?
With proper care, vinyl floors can last 10-20 years. High-quality vinyl is durable, water-resistant, and handles everyday wear well. To keep them looking their best, clean regularly, avoid scratching, and use furniture pads under heavy items.
